Spring Fever: Love is Complicated!

Spring Fever comes every spring. When I was in school, the last semester of high school and college always seemed to bring relationship drama. People either started dating because they needed a date for prom, or breaking up so they to be and available during the summer.

When a person gets spring fever, it seems like there’s no controlling it. The fever has caused me to make my share of mistakes, but I’d like to share one of my success stories to encourage you.

Our high school had a Christmas dance every year. A bunch of us usually went as “just friends” because none of us were interested in anyone in our small school of 250. However, when I was old enough for prom, my heart changed. I still didn’t like anyone, but who goes to prom with a friend? Right?

The situation became complicated when a buddy of mine asked me to be his date because I had NO romantic interest in him at all. Staying true to myself, but risking not having a date as well, I said, “No.” And yes, I felt like a jerk. So, when our mutual friend came back to me and said, “Will you give him a chance? He just wants to go as friends,” I changed my mind. “But we’re going as JUST FRIENDS,” I said.

As you’ve probably already guessed the night was super uncomfortable. He came on to me the entire night, squeezing me too close when we danced, and putting his arm around me for unwanted comfort.

And then the drive home! I knew he was going to try to kiss me, but I just wasn’t attracted to him. I tried to imagine any situation where locking lips would be romantic, and came to the conclusion that “it” just wasn’t there.

So, when pulled in my driveway, I bolted for my door. He followed quickly, but I managed to squeeze myself halfway inside the doorway. The awkward position gave me just enough room to say thank you, but not enough for him to go for it.

I knew he was completely deflated, and the entire situation made me feel cruel, but looking back, I’m proud I stood my ground. I said I would go as friends, and I held my stance.

Hold that Thought and Make it Real:

I know he was a guy just trying to get a kiss, but I was a girl just trying to go as friends; so I did. I didn’t want to start a “relationship” I wasn’t in to; so I didn’t.

I’m writing this to all you girls who are unsure about that guy or feel like you’re stuck in a complicated relationship. It’s okay to not be interested. It’s okay to break off a relationship full of drama. You don’t owe that guy anything. In fact, Jesus encourages us not to awaken love too soon. "Promise me, O women of Jerusalem not to awaken love until the time is right." (Song of Songs 8:4) So, if you're holding back, be proud because you're holding on to Jesus' advice.

And if you’re in this situation and you need a little encouragement, leave a comment and I’ll will pray for you. You’re not alone, even though it may seem like it because everyone around you is getting spring fever.

That was Sweet, what should I Tweet?
